ORANGE HOUSE
ORANGE HOUSE
Settled in the developing precincts of Kharbi, the client had a very basic brief of two bedrooms, hall and a kitchen for a for a family of four. The dimension of the plot is 30’ x 55’ and was developed with a budget of INR 25 lacs.
This project was sought as an opportunity to demonstrate that a small plot can accommodate an aesthetically designed home with no compromises on comfort.
It’s a dry locality with scarce vegetation that raised the need for creating green spaces inside. This decision let the user connect with nature and was achieved by turning the peripheral passages into green spaces.
The massing of the house is fairly simple and is based on the basic design principle of addition and subtraction of volumes to create voids and rigid geometries. Two negative volumes created in front of the house function as the entrance foyer and car park area. The living area and staircase tower can be perceived as two cuboidal volumes added to the mass. Horizontal and vertical lines sinked in crisp solid volumes define the front elevation of the house.
Spatially the house has been divided into two types of spaces. One is the extroverted zone, comprising of the entrance foyer, living and dining area looking towards the street. The idea was to create a visual connectivity amongst the informal spaces to create a sense of bigger spatial volume. The other is the introverted zone comprising of the two bedrooms.
The interiors emphasize on creating green pockets and drawing natural light penetrating through the volume. A small court with skylight has been added beside the dining and pooja space. The light entering through the skylight is ever present throughout the day, with the pooja area receiving the early morning sun. The wall underneath the skylight is cladded using yellow Shahabad stone acts as a natural canvas for the light entering from above.
Post noon, the sunlight gushes into the house from the front facade creating beautiful patterns that highlights the volume and solid geometry of the house. During evening one can see a beautiful sunset from the front foyer and living area.
The house is designed with wood, white and gray color theme. A stark orange color is used to highlight the walls enveloping the front façade. The use of orange emphasizes the volume and dramatizes the entrance. Wood is used in the front elevation to create vertical louvers, while windows and fabricated staircase brings a touch of luxury to the house.
